Shrapnel - “Combat Love”
“Combat Love” b/w “Hey” was the first single released in 1979 followed by “Go Cruising” b/w “Way Out World” in 1981. They also released a LP but the label gave up on them soon after its release causing the band to split up in 1984.
The band played a lot in New York, opened several times for the Ramones, and played at CBGB’s.
Shrapnel was produced by Legs McNeil, Punk magazine co-founder. Dave Wyndorf, the singer, later formed Monster Magnet.
In ‘The England Dreaming Tapes’, by Jon Savage, Legs McNeil says that Shrapnel was a response to Vietnam and he wanted the band to perform like characters, actors (that’s why they often dressed in army camouflage) and he also says that the band was a reaction to English groups, which he hated by then.
